Son-Cam-Ha liberation campaign highlighted
QĐND - Tuesday, July 31, 2012, 20:51 (GMT+7)

PANO - Nearly 30 reports were presented by witnesses, scientists, Quang Nam Provincial leaders in different periods during a scientific seminar held on July 31st at Tien Phuoc district, asserting that the victory of the campaign crossing Tien River to liberate Son-Cam-Ha was the victory of self-confidence, cleverness and steel will of determination of troops and people in Quang Nam Province.

That victory was a brilliant milestone in a new revolutionary stage in the locality.

In late 1962, Party Committee and Command of Military Zone 5 planned to launch an operation in rainy season to occupy the bordering area in an attempt to pave the way for revolutionary forces to head for the delta.

Accordingly, the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee and army section conducted their activities in three directions: north, central and south of the province, with the key mission of pushing up armed and political activities to destroy the strategic hamlet system and to encourage local people to break the enemy grip in the delta, to develop guerilla warfare and to create conditions to build a base that linked the delta with the mountain.

In the evening of September 25th, 1962, Company 2 under Battalion 70 (Quang Nam Provincial army section), crossed Tien River and launched attacks on the enemy. As a result, three communes of Phuoc Son, Phuoc Cam and Phuoc Ha (present Tien Son, Tien Cam and Tien Ha) were liberated along with some areas in Thang Binh, Tam Ky and southwest of Que Son.

Crossing Tien River and liberating Son-Cam-Ha was the first large-scale campaign run by Quang Nam provincial armed forces. The success confirmed the maturity of Quang Nam Provincial armed forces in the early stage of the fight against the strategy “Special Warfare” of American imperialists and puppet troops.

Many valuable lessons and experiences on the people’s war and military tactics acquired from the campaign were learnt.
