A delegation led by the Deputy Head of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Commission for External Relations, Vuong Thua Phong, attended the international conference on “Peace and Conciliation in Asia” held on April 25-26 in Dili, the capital of Timor Leste.

The conference, part of the International Conference for Asian Political Parties, attracted 51 delegates from 16 countries.

The participants discussed a wide range of issues, including peace and conciliation in Asia , the management of natural resources to prevent conflicts, climate change and natural disasters and mechanisms for settling disputes.

They discussed the challenges that political parties and governments face when promoting peace and conciliation between countries’s political systems.

The conference also focused on the relationship that exists between issues relating to climate change, natural resources and the risk of disputes when Asia’s natural resources begin to run out.
The Timor Leste statement on was released during the conference, which summarised the lessons learnt by several nations that had experienced prolonged political tensions in the past.

The statement called on all political parties, governments and civil organisations to step up dialogue and cooperation with peace, prosperity and development in the region being a common goal, making the 21st century the “century of Asia”.

Later the Vietnamese delegation met with Timor Leste’s President Jose Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.

They also held a meeting with representatives of Timor Leste’s ruling party, the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction and its Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs on promoting cooperation between both countries.
