OV Chef triumphs at Beijing cooking contest

The American-Vietnamese Chef, Duong Huy Khai, won a gold medal in the individual competition of the first Beijing International Cuisine Competition.
Russian cook Igor Tumarkin from the SIA Center of Hospitality got a silver and Thanaphat Buapijit from Thai Terrace Restaurant in Dubai a bronze.
Khai’s soup is a creative type of consommé, made from chopped tomato, beet, citronella, carrot and onion stirred with egg white, and tomato filled with ginkgo cooked with bird’s nest from the south central province of Khanh Hoa.
He is now Executive Chef of Ana Mandara, a contemporary Vietnamese restaurant owned by US actor Don Johnson in San Francisco and a jury member of the Vietnamese Iron Chef contest.
Held at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in China from June 19-21, the Beijing International Cuisine Competition drew more than 200 leading chefs from over 30 countries worldwide.
