HCM City to save energy via efficient lights

A year-long campaign to use energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs for public lighting was launched on Dec. 11 by HCM City in Go Vap District.
The use of such bulbs on streets and parks and other public areas is expected to dramatically slash electricity costs for the city.
At least 10 million wKh of electric power, equivalent to 10 billion VND (588,000 USD) in cost, is expected to be saved citywide each year, according to Huynh Kim Tuoc, director of HCM City’s Energy Conservation Centre.
Tuoc said energy used for public lighting in the city accounts for 35 percent of total energy consumption, and that annual demand is expected to increase year-on-year by 15 percent.
Using more energy-efficient light bulbs in public areas is part of the country’s energy conservation strategy toward 2015.
During a pilot test of the programme last year, Go Vap District replaced 1,784 bulbs, and saved 363,000 wKh of energy.
By the end of next year, the district is expected to replace a total of 9,000 low-capacity bulbs with compact fluorescent lights.
The use of energy-efficient bulbs for public lighting in Go Vap District will help cut 2.1 million wKh, or 2.4 billion VND in electricity costs, and help reduce 134 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
